Thanksgiving is great: family, friends and food.
One thing that is not always great: table conversations. I am not even going to mention politics because, let’s be honest, you need a whole other post about that topic. I do want to focus on things you can talk about with aunts, uncles, parents and grandparents that do not focus on your relationship status.
My experience is that my relationship status makes or breaks (usually breaks) the conversation momentum. If I am single, the conversation stops. If I am dating someone, there are a few follow-up questions but then the conversation becomes stagnant.
Regardless of your relationship status, sometimes family needs help in relating to us young and hip generations. Since your aunt and uncle likely won’t read this post, keep these topics in mind if you want to steer the conversation a bit with fresh, new topics.
Each of us are doing cool things besides marriage and having babies, so let’s shed some light on other positive aspects of life. My questions are about travel, books and music but add any to the list you can think of to customize the topics.

- Do you have any favorite travel photos?
- What are you watching on Netflix right now?
- Do you have any Hulu/Netflix/Amazon/Disney+ suggestions?
- Do you think all these streaming services are worth it? Pros and cons?
- What book are you reading right now?
- Do you have any book suggestions?
- Do you like e-readers or regular books?
- Thoughts on the new live action Disney films like Aladdin, Lion King, etc.?
- Is modern rock music real rock, pop music or not edgy enough?
- Do you think 80s music is classic rock or considered ‘oldies’ yet?
- What is the family recipe for < insert recipe name here> ?
- Have you joined any local teams or clubs?
- What’s the deal with online dating? Choose which app to focus on wisely.
